Nature Guide - Bird watching

THE WILDERNESS EXPERIENCE

An escape from the stress and noise of everyday life is an interesting alternative suggestion for a select public, combining art and history with notions of zoology, botany, geology, local traditions and - why not? - stories and legends of the regional woods.

BIRD WATCHING

The extensive wetlands along the coasts of Emilia-Romagna in the provinces of Ferrara and Ravenna have been declared areas of international importance for aquatic birds. The sites are therefore best known for the spectacular bird life, which attracts great numbers of ornithologists and birdwatchers in every season.
Huge bird populations are to be found in every period of the year, particularly in the wetlands - both freshwater and marine - where there is plenty of opportunity for food, shelter and nesting.
This is because the Po Delta is on the migratory routes of a variety of bird species, which pass over Italy from Northern Europe on their way to winter in Africa or the Southern Mediterranean. On special guided visits, the tops of turrets and old fortified houses may be used as observation posts to catch sight of rare wintering and nesting species such as

  • Tufted Duck
  • Purple Heron
  • Oyster-catcher
  • Little Tern
  • Mediterranean Gull
  • Little Egret
  • Sheldrake
  • Black-winged Stilt
  • Avocet
  • Slender-billed Gull
  • Sandwich Tern
  • Gull-billed Tern
  • Lesser Crested Tern
  • Bittern
  • Little Bittern
  • Night Heron
  • Squacco Heron
  • Grey Heron
  • Cattle Egret
  • thousands of Flamingos

The vast cane brakes of the Po Delta also provide an ideal habitat for a huge variety of small birds such as

  • the Kingfisher
  • Cetti's Warbler
  • Sedge Warbler
  • Reed Warbler
  • Great Reed Warbler
  • Reedling
  • Reed Bunting
